Trigeminal Neuralgia

In this disease, there is severe pain like an electrical shock in one of the face. If the pain is not relieved by medication, a nerve block using radio frequency lesioning can provide long term pain relief.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain. If you have trigeminal neuralgia, even mild stimulation of your face — such as from brushing your teeth or putting on makeup — may trigger a jolt of excruciating pain. You may initially experience short, mild attacks. But trigeminal neuralgia can progress and cause longer, more-frequent bouts of searing pain. Trigeminal neuralgia affects women more often than men, and it's more likely to occur in people who are older than 50.Because of the variety of treatment options available, having trigeminal neuralgia doesn't necessarily mean you're doomed to a life of pain. Doctors at Meenakshi Pain Management Clinic usually can effectively manage trigeminal neuralgia with medications, injections or surgery.

Trigeminal neuralgia symptoms may include one or more of these patterns:

  • Episodes of severe, shooting or jabbing pain that may feel like an electric shock
  • Spontaneous attacks of pain or attacks triggered by things such as touching the face, chewing, speaking or brushing teeth
  • Bouts of pain lasting from a few seconds to several minutes
  • Episodes of several attacks lasting days, weeks, months or longer — some people have periods when they experience no pain
  • Constant aching, burning feeling that may occur before it evolves into the spasm-like pain of trigeminal neuralgia
  • Pain in areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve, including the cheek, jaw, teeth, gums, lips, or less often the eye and forehead
  • Pain affecting one side of the face at a time, though may rarely affect both sides of the face

At Meenakshi Pain Management Center, we have treated several patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia. Dr. Yashwant Nankar & Dr. Meenakshi Nankar has experience of several years to treat the patients of Trigeminal Neuralgia.

Our Treatments on Sciatica/Back Pain

Spinal Cord Stimulator

A Spinal Cord Stimulator or Dorsal Column Stimulator is a type of implantable neuromodulation device that is used to send electrical signals to select areas of the spinal cord for the treatment of certain pain conditions. It is consideration for people who have a pain condition not responded to conservative therapy.

Nerve Root Block

A nerve root block is an injection of local anesthetic (numbing medicine) and steroid injected under X-ray guidance into the area where the nerve exits the spinal column. A nerve root block is usually ordered by your doctor for pain in the arm or leg that follows the path of a single nerve.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation is a medical procedure in which part of the electrical conduction system of the heart, tumor or other dysfunctional tissue is ablated using the heat generated from medium frequency alternating current.

Epidural Injection

Epidural steroid injection is a technique in which corticosteroids and a local anesthetic are injected into the epidural space around the spinal cord in an effort to improve spinal stenosis, spinal disc herniation, or
both.

Neuromodulation

Neuromodulation is "the alteration of nerve activity through targeted delivery of a stimulus, such as electrical stimulation or chemical agents, to specific neurological sites in the body".

Electrical Nerve Stimulation

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a therapy that uses low-voltage electrical current for pain relief.TENS is typically done with a TENS unit, a small battery-operated device.
